Self Sabotage

Wouldn’t it be nice to “think yourself lean?” Obviously this is not a successful method to lose weight or to get into shape. No amount of positive thinking is going to create results without action, however a very important part of getting in shape is simply making up your mind to do so. Setting goals and thinking about them all day long is a huge component in your fitness journey. Even the best nutrition and training program is useless without the right mental attitude.
Positive thoughts and affirmations are extremely effective, however you cannot wish for the positive while thinking about the negative. Frequent repetition of thoughts or mental commands will penetrate the subconscious mind. If you program your mind with negative thoughts often enough, it will lead to self sabotage, such as cheating on your diet or skipping workouts. We need to focus our thoughts on what we want to achieve, not what we want to avoid.
Negative statements that we want to avoid include:
“I can’t lose weight no matter what I do.”
“Why is it so hard for me to lose weight?”
“I have a slow metabolism.”
“I don’t have the willpower to get lean.”
“I don’t have time to workout.”
“I’m tired of working out, but getting nowhere.”
“I’ll never see my abs.”
“I have cardio.”
“I’ll try.”
We carry on mental conversation all day long, most of which are negative. We need to become conscious of what we are thinking and saying. As soon as you catch a negative thought creeping into your head, immediately replace it with a positive thought.
Examples of positive self-talk include:
“What can I do today to get me closer to my ideal weight.”
“How great am I going to feel after I finish my workout today.”
“My metabolism is getting faster everyday.”
“I am getting leaner everyday.”
“I like the way I look.”
“I am doing whatever it takes.”
“I can.”
“I am unstoppable.”
“I have time for anything I’m committed to.”
